To God Who giveth joy to my youth

The gate to the altar said, "Introibo ad altare Dei." I will go in unto the altar of God.

The response at Latin Mass is, "Ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam." To God Who giveth joy to my youth.

Much joy was had on our field trip to DC on Tuesday. Our homeschool group even met up with another homeschooling family visiting the area that heard of our trip on a Catholic homeschool yahoogroup! So 7 homeschool families accompanied by a kind Priest spent the day touring the Basilica. Our priest said Mass for us in a side chapel. After a few hours we left to visit the John Paul II cultural center interactive museum. The kids had the whole place to themselves and were delighted to be given clipboards and a scavenger hunt list.

Below are some photographs from the trip. As the April Shower of Photos blog carnival ends I post these and hope that the 30 or so blog photographers who tried new things will continue to be inspired by Jennifer's idea and will keep taking photos and talking about them. It's been great!

April Shower of Photos IN THE RAIN - day 28

Today was an April Shower day! Just love, love, love the rain and the mood it evokes. Every color today was just bursting.

I had remembered reading that it was important to share with your children your hobbies...that your love for something will translate. So I got out some photo books and explained aperature and shutter and macro focus and we got our feet wet, literally!

St. Louis de Montfort - Totus Tuus - To Jesus through Mary!

Totus Tuus!

Today is the feast day of St. Louis de Montfort who developed this devotion and total consecration that Pope John Paul II cited as the foundation of his spirituality. It is the motto of this blog and family as well.

Visit this Monfort Fathers Treatise on True Devotion and disposition for Mass....take MARY to Mass....

"O Mary, I take you for my all; give me your heart."

Pope John Paul II made and lived total consecration to Jesus through Mary according to the formula of St. Louis de Montfort. He referred specifically to this Marian devotion in section 48 of his encyclical Mother of the Redeemer (“Redemptoris Mater”). He also referred to it in his book, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, in the chapter entitled, “The Mother of God,” and in Gift and Mystery, in the chapter entitled “The Marian Thread.”

Pope John Paul II’s Latin motto, ‘Totus Tuus,’ is emblazoned on his papal coat of arms. This Latin motto is literally translated as: “All Yours.” In Gift and Mystery, he reveals the origin and meaning of this motto: The phrase comes from St. Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort. It is an abbreviation of a more complete form of entrustment to the Mother of God which runs like this: Totus Tuus ego sum et omnia mea tua sunt. Accipio Te in mea omnia. Praebe mihi cor Tuum, Maria. (I am all yours, and all I have is yours. I welcome you into all my affairs and concerns. Show me your heart, O Mary.)

The commitment of this consecration requires one to surrender everything without any reservation in order to put it all in Mary’s hands. She utilizes this sacrifice to lead and help those who make it to “do whatever he tells you.”(cf. John 2:5). Doing whatever Jesus tells us means simply fulfilling our responsibilities at each present moment. St. Louis calls this consecration a “secret” because so few discover and take full advantage of it. In section 172 of his treatise on True Devotion he writes: “It must be noted that our good works, passing through Mary’s hands, are progressively purified. Consequently, their merit and their satisfactory and prayer value are also increased. That is why they become much more effective in relieving the souls in Purgatory and in converting sinners than if they did not pass through the virginal and liberal hands of Mary…the little that we give to the Blessed Virgin is truly powerful enough to appease the anger of God and draw down his mercy.” (Cardinal Luigi Ciappi, the former papal theologian, calls this the “Marian Multiplier”.) - All this taken from Catholic Familyland, as we have used and enjoyed their Family Consecration materials that add the writings of Pope JPII and include union with St. Joseph to the Montfort Consecration.

And so today, on the homeschool docket, we have the following....

I will recap the read-aloud book on St. Louis de Montfort that I read the children recently and we will also watch his VHS biography.

Living in the past

You've Changed 40% in 10 Years
Ah, the past! You may not remember it well - because you're still living in it.
While you've changed some, you may want to update your wardrobe, music collection and circle of friends.

April shower of photos - Day 26

It's greening up out back.

I love photographing the children when they don't know it.

I wonder what they wonder?

And, inspired by some of the other's participating in April Shower of Photos, I played around with black and white a little.

A Rupture from The Past

...Ratzinger's third major criticism of the liturgical reform was that whatever its virtues, the new missal, both in particular sections and in its entirety, leaves the impression of a rupture with the past, and can seem contrived. It resembles more a compilation by a committee of professors than the organic development of a truly living liturgy. "In the place of liturgy as the fruit of development came fabricated liturgy," Ratzinger wrote. "We abandoned the organic, living process of growth and development over centuries, and replaced it -- as in a manufacturing process -- with a fabrication, a banal on-the-spot product."

The movie - The Mission

Have you ever seen this movie? It is my favorite.

And the music is the soundtrack to my wedding video...

Libera - Salve Me

40 years later ... are we stronger?

For a rollicking, rollercoaster of a read check our Rorate Caeli's post on the SSPX's recent letter. The Society feels the Summorum Pontificum changes have not gone far enough stating, in part,

"...it is necessary to conclude that nothing [sic] has changed in the will of Rome to follow the Conciliar orientations, despite forty years of crisis, despite the deserted convents, the abandoned rectories, the empty churches. The Catholic universities persist in their ramblings, the teaching of the Catechism remains unknown at the same time that the Catholic school does not exist anymore as particularly Catholic: it has become an extinct species… [sic]"

The comments, back and forth, are fascinating!

Paul , who created the above cartoon says, " but if they'd just get on, it would help kick the hippies off the bus."

Likewise, anonymous at Rorate Caeli commented, " You can't clean the stable from outside the barn."

And, Oh! what Recapturing Our Catholic Patrimony says about working on our own personal holiness, " Despite 40 years of turbulence, the real question that needs to be asked is not why hasn’t the big guy done anything [for surely we know he has – just look at the short history of his pontificate], rather what can I do to bring about change, holiness, and grace, into the particular part of the world in which I live.God’s grace is present to us in every moment, in our everyday. Why is it I so easily lose sight of it, failing to be God’s vessel of change and grace in my life, in my temple, in my local Church?
And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ; Eph. 4:11-13"

Like a captain at the helm of a ship

THE NEW YORK TIMES recently wrote so beautifully, so metaphorically about the Traditional Latin Mass. Here is an excerpt....

On a hushed, stained-glass Sunday, in a small old church that had lately regained some of its original luster, a priest stood before the altar in the vaulted gold sanctuary praying quietly — whispering, almost — in a language largely unfamiliar to most Roman Catholics under the age of 50.

“Dominus vobiscum,” the Rev. John Grimm said. (“The Lord be with you.”)

“Et cum spiritu tuo,” replied the three altar boys flanking him. (“And with thy spirit.”)

Father Grimm was looking not at the 117 worshipers, almost a full house, who were kneeling in the pews of Our Lady of Victories, but toward the large crucifix hanging above the altar, like a captain at the helm of a ship.

Can Bill Maher become a modern day Paul?

Sounds to me like Bill Mayer may have his own ugly past with the Catholic Church and needs our prayers. Anyone who acts like this is CRYING for attention and wants intervention. Deep down he must want our prayers and to be reconciled with the Faith.

God has used stranger subjects for radical conversions....

April shower photos - by the light of the silvery moon

A magical day sometimes turns into a....

magical night!

On our way to bed my son noticed the big, glowing moon. It seemed a perfect moment to pull out the tripod and try to capture it.

Out back, with the deck spot lights on and the tripod set up, it looked like faeries might come out to dance any moment!

The fearless adventurer, the joyful pixie, the protector and guide and the thinker. Amazing how photography can sometimes capture the soul.

Holy Father's DC Mass

Imagine that you are a member of a society.

Imagine that the head of the society has written extensively on the benefits of healthy living through a vegetarian lifestyle.

Imagine that he graces you with a visit.

AND YOU SERVE HIM HOTDOGS!

Why? :(

Pray for us Holy Father....

April Shower of photos - day 13

CURRICULUM FAIRS - Let the buying begin!

I like the reflection of the books in the table but I have a new found appreciation for how merchandisers stage their materials. How do you make a photo like this look enticing?

Then, there's this photo of concentration...a little girl learning to write her letters. Again, more table reflection here too.

Here's a stop-action photo that challenges me. I'll bet if I read my manual I could find tips for the back light.
The boy's got hops.

Chess

For day 9 of the April Showers of Photos, I photographed the children at lunch and playing chess. After reading about Chess (which I loved playing at their age) and academic studies, I've decided to set up the board at their lunch table weekly...to start out. It proved very engaging for them all.

For me, it was a great opportunity to practice the upfront focus and background blur of aperature features... and some closeups too.

For them, well, the benefits of CHESS are outstanding!

Shower of photos - day 8

This may be one of my favorite pictures....
It so completely captures a moment in time, the essence of where we were and who we are!

April shower of photos - day 5

Using the setting to create a panning effect, following the action - daughter in focus yet blurring the background. Click on the picture to see effect.

I think my camera is taking some good night pictures without a flash as discussed here.

April shower of photos

I'm starting a bit late, so here's a photo evoking the feeling of trying to catch up...
This great blog idea brought to you by S/V Mari Hal-O-Jen. Experiment with your camera for a photo to blog each day of April.
This is a night shot, obviously, taken of a car passing ours. My camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50.

Cause and Effect

Visit THIS AND THAT at the blog, Hallowed Ground - where all the great photos reside!

See how THIS gets THAT!

Beware, she knows not The Way

Chapter 2
He warns them against false teachers and foretells their punishment.

1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their riotousnesses, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their perdition slumbereth not.

The Pope's about to drop in

About that Papal skateboard....

Loved seeing this on Father Z's blog. He tips his biretta to The Curt Jester blog and Father Blake's blog. I do too.

The wonderful thing about Tiggers ... and Pooh

I heard this come from the VCR today, "We got too much time to waste to stand here doing things." --Tigger . We've enjoyed many such Tigger-isms over the years. We get fer-rusterated and it's not a windy day, it's BLUSTERY!

I had to smile and think back on a childhood shared with Pooh. My children adore this sweet family of characters - Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit, Gopher, Owl, Roo...

Our video collection is vast and like comfort food, they come back to these movies often. We are a house of Pooh videos, books, and giant stuffed animals. I'll always remember each of their childhood's as shared with Pooh. I have 3 Christopher Robins and like the Disney Tigger and Pooh new animated morning show, I also have a new, little Darby... Christopher Robins' kid sister.
