Feast of Jeanne D'Arc

Joan is my Confirmation name, taken with my admiration of St. Joan of Arc and also for my maternal grandmother ,who shares this middle name.

When I lived in NYC, I loved visiting "her". At the Met you could stare into her eyes the painting is so large. When I left NYC, "she" came with me and has remained over my mantle ever since.

Joan reminds us to be brave for God, to pray for the brave... and to listen to the Holy voices of our friends, the saints.

Prayer to St. Joan of Arc For Faith

In the face of your enemies, in the face of harassment, ridicule, and doubt, you held firm in your faith. Even in your abandonment, alone and without friends, you held firm in your faith. Even as you faced your own mortality, you held firm in your faith. I pray that I may be as bold in my beliefs as you, St. Joan. I ask that you ride alongside me in my own battles. Help me be mindful that what is worthwhile can be won when I persist. Help me hold firm in my faith. Help me believe in my ability to act well and wisely. Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus and homeschoolers

It's the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

Today's MARY VITAMIN...

Quote:
Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
"Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, in order to testify its love."

Meditation:
What offering can a person dedicated to the Immaculate make to the Sacred Heart of Jesus? St. John Eudes has a suggestion:

O Jesus, only Son of God, only Son of Mary,
I offer Thee the most loving Heart of Thy divine Mother
which is more precious and pleasing to Thee than all hearts.

O Mary, Mother of Jesus,
I offer Thee the most adorable Heart of Thy well-beloved Son,
who is the life and love and joy of Thy Heart.

Blessed be the Most Loving Heart
and Sweet Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ
and the most glorious
Virgin Mary, His Mother,
in eternity and forever.
Amen.
~St. John Eudes

Resolution:
In honor of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, I will say the prayer composed by St. John Eudes. If during the day I can’t remember the words, I will simply offer the Immaculate Heart of Mary to the Lord and offer the Sacred Heart to my Mother Mary.

Our Homeschool group of 30+ Catholic families has been meeting for the First Friday devotion for 2 years now. We'll accomplish our 9th First Friday in June. The hand of God brought us to this. At our first meeting to create our group we agreed that we wanted to make the focus of our gatherings sacramental. We asked a friendly priest in a historic registry, city church if he would say First Friday Masses for homeschoolers. He courageously and unhesitatingly agreed, even agreeing to do more. Shortly thereafter his school shut down, but in God's Divine Providence He has sent this priest new students....us!

Our beloved Father starts Adoration after his 8am Mass. At 11am the homeschoolers arrive for Adoration and Confession. Quiet a line forms as all the eligible children, their moms and sometimes even their dads fulfill the requirements of the devotion and of their Catholic conscience. There are usually about 50 of us in attendance! Before noon Father performs Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and then says a Mass just for us. His homily is always of a teaching nature to our children, who adore him. They talk about how he glows, his kindness. After Mass he allows us to stay and have lunch. It is a friendship building time of fellowship for the homeschoolers. What treasure this fine priest is storing up in heaven! He is such an example to all of us of self-sacrifice.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus surround this priest in fortifying love!

Something about Mary ~ Day 24

"Love of the Blessed Virgin is not a complication nor an aside in Christianity, for, as doctrine and experience prove, Mary naturally turns us toward Jesus, and by Him toward the Father, in the Holy Spirit."
~Bishop Louis Joseph Kerkhofs

For Reflection: How have I seen this to be true in the lives of the saints? To what extent has this been true in my own life?

To be grateful for this Memorial Day...

According to SNOPES, this was written by Craig R. Smith and not Jay Leno! Thank you Aunty Bettina, see you Memorial Day.

"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true, given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed, and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence, 2/3's of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What are we so unhappy about?'' Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?

Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time, and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?

Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough.

Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all, and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings.

Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don 't have , and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the President who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? [Yet this President seeks to protect the defenseless 4000+ unborn citizens killed DAILY thru abortion.] The President who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same President who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks?

The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?

Think about it -- are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. [Babies, on the other hand, don't have choice, nor would they choose to be killed. The unborn are Americans too.] Our wonderful service men and women are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig. [I wish they were safe too!]

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans? Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way -- Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad.

We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative."

Lord, for what we have recieved may we be truly grateful. God Bless America. Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn and the Americas, pray for us!

from St. Peter Julian Eymard with HT to The Mary Vitamin

“And now, she not only begs her Son for holy vocations, but she guards and protects them. The priest is Mary’s privileged child. It is she who trains him to piety in youth and shields his virtue; she it is who nourishes his fervor, who leads him by the hand to the foot of the altar and presents him to the Bishop, as once she offered Jesus in the Temple. She encourages him in the thousand sacrifices of study, in his combats against fear of the priestly responsibility. The priest formed by Mary!_O good and holy priest, how well Jesus will receive thee!”
Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, 138-9.

Something About Mary ~ Day 22

O Mary, Mother of Salvation, purify our hearts, detach them from the earth, and unite them to Thine in order to ask of the Eternal Father: Mercy for the sinners, mercy for the sinners, mercy for the sinners. O Mary, Mother of Salvation, convert the sinners and assist the unfortunate who are suffering in body and soul. May the Eternal Father, through the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, be merciful unto me, and may the Mother of Salvation be my salvation.
Mother of Salvation, Be my salvation.

Where to find Catholic men

"Come here often?"

A friend and I joke that the Traditional Latin Mass would be a great place for a single, Catholic woman to meet a husband!

In my experience, Traditional Latin Mass attendance is more populated with men in contrast to the predominance of women at the Novus Ordo Masses.

I once asked a priest who offers both the "old" and "new" Mass about this and he agreed. He said he felt like more of a Moses ascending the mount/altar for us and bringing down God to us.

This article and this priestly blog entry both very much tie into the theme of masculinity, Mass and the priesthood.

St. Bernardine of Siena on the nobility of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On this the 20th day of Something About Mary, and the feast of St. Bernardine of Siena it is nice to read how this saint honored Our Blessed Mother.

Here's an excerpt... "the Evangelists describe in this Maiden every distinction, gift, power, nobility, and dignity which might be in any human individual born according to the flesh, it is incumbent upon us, following their witness, to prefer Her to all princes and princesses, queens and kings, emperors and empresses, and all powers, tribes, and tongues of the whole universe. That the whole world, after the fall of our first parents, was kept in being by God out of love of the Blessed Virgin."

....in the schoolroom no less! The heady smell of lilacs freshly cut from the bush out back this morning will most likely lead to my distraction today. I wish I could make the blooms last forever!

Have a fragrant day! :)

Nana's prayer book ~ Day 18 Something About Mary

It is my treasure to have the pocket prayer book that belonged to my paternal Grandmother. My Nana was truly Catholic and I take solace in knowing that our relationship and faith sharing continue as my hands embrace where her hands once did.

Her prayer book is always tucked into my handbag. In it are a cache of prayers I never knew and am delighted to now pray. I especially like the prayers for before and after Holy Communion.

On this, the 18th day of Something About Mary, (more than half way until the contest ends on my blogiversary) I include for you the sweetest Marian prayer to say before receiving Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

ACT OF HUMILITY

Dearest Jesus, you know that I love You and that I am sorry for all the pain, sorrow and disappointment I have ever caused You, as well as for my want of love and thought of You since Your last visit to me yesterday. Take me into Your arms and and give me the Kiss of forgiveness.... Now I know that all is forgiven. Mary, dearest Mother, is it not wonderful that soon, very soon, your dear Son, Jesus is to enter into my soul! O Loving Mother, do make this soul of mine very beautiful by adorning it with your own adornments : love, humility, simplicity, hiddenness. detachment, selfless consideration and kindness for others, so that when Jesus comes to me a few minutes He will just delight to dwell in me.

May your Sunday be blest by His visit, and Our Lady's intercession.

Like a Norman Rockwell picture....

On a breezy, cool, perfect Saturday our Latin Mass group had it's annual picnic at the park. Under the pavillon, families gathered at picnic tables. Men around the grill cooked and talked, kids played on the playground equipment, women chatted, set up food to share and kept eyes on their little ones. A softball game was played, horseshoes were thrown and one mom attempted to make homemade icecream in a can surrounded by ice and salt. It was a day like a Norman Rockwell picture, truly!

I didn't want the day to end, so many images to capture! Sweet friends with their polite children left me feeling very introspective and wistful. Here are a few things I absorbed...

These are the days that will live in our memories because they touch on so many of our senses. As I watched a bunch of children imaginatively hiding and traipsing through some tall meadow grasses they seemed like characters out of the Lion King. Other children rolled down a hill together at the same time, their giggles growing softer as they descended. I hoped that today would be imprinted on their minds , especially the way the breeze felt in their faces and hair. Surely they'd remember the way the grass felt soft as it cushioned their tumbling...the way the tall grass was actually scratchy, leaving marks on their arms? They'd remember the sounds of their friends laughing and the taste of all the sugary treats, and the smell of the charcoal.

My husband noticed how the teasing was always gentle on the ball field and these children always spoke to him so respectfully.

Lastly, I saw the most tender relationships. It is often said of homeschoolers that they are missing socialization. Is schoolroom socialization really indicative of the real world? Will you ever again be in a room of 30+ people all your exact age? No, the "real world" is made up of mixed age relationships....and here it was! Here, at this picnic all the children got along. Little ones were looked after by bigger ones... in enjoyment NOT obligation. My youngest son paired off with the oldest boy in another family to play different games. My 10 year old son spent the day with his favorite little toddler from another family. Friendship doesn't know age, kindness is not self-conscious.

Yes, it was one of those days you wish would never end....

I hope you got a wisp of that cool breeze blowing across your face this weekend too and that it tickled your senses alive!

Recieving Communion

At the baptism of our daughter, we were at a church that was without kneelers as they raised money to build a church. We had chosen my cousin and his wife as our daughters godparents and knew them to be faithful Catholics. Although kneelers are only meant to assist us at Mass the majority of the congregation never knelt. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal directs us to kneel from after the Sanctus (“Holy, Holy, Holy”) to after the Great Amen and to kneel also after the Agnus Dei (“Lamb of God.) At Masses for severals hundreds, we were generally one of perhaps a dozen "kneelers" at this church. Considering that we'd be at the front for the baptism we wondered how the godparents would feel about kneeling and we decided to follow their lead. They knelt. When we shared our relief after the baptism my soft-spoken, gentle cousin was uncharacteristically firm and empassioned as he reminded us, "Do you think that when we are before Our Lord face to face we could choose not to kneel? No, St. Michael would push us to our knees in reverence of Christ!" And yet, we are before Christ and the choir of angels at the reception of the Eucharist.

When the Catholic church stopped kneeling to recieve Our Lord at Communion 40 years ago, when we started "taking" Him like a potato chip out of our hand, instead of recieving Him in humility from consecrated hands, we started down the slippery slope of losing our reverence. Not surprising that there are so many today that are so casual about The Most Blessed Sacrament. Weekly confession is a thing of the past, dressing for our King, prayers after Mass...do they really believe that hidden in the host IS Our Lord and Savior? If we did believe, wouldn't we go to Adoration to be with the one we love?

Do you know what Mother Teresa said?

Of Mary There is Never Enough

mother & infant ....

The book, The Mystical City of God keeps coming up for me, on lists, mentioned as top Catholic reads by holy priests....

and Of Mary There is Never Enough by William Biersach is a feast of words extolling Our Lady. Here again is another mention of this saint to know....

...No one could ever "look down" at the vulnerable humanity of Jesus Christ more intimately than Mary His Mother as she held Him in Her arms. She nursed Him, clothed Him, saw to His physical needs when He was a defenseless infant. [He chose for it to be that way.]

In this light, do not the reverent words of a Saint make far more sense than the mediocre rendition handed to us on paper plates by the modernists?

In my admiration I can say with St. Dionysius and Areopagite:"If faith would not instruct me, and if the understanding of what I see would not teach me, that is God, who conceived Her in his mind, and who alone could and can in his Omnipotence form such an image of his Divinity, if all this were not present to my mind, I might begin to doubt, whether the Virgin Mother contain not in Herself Divinity."

- Sister Mary of Jesus of Agreda, "The Conception"
Mystical City of God

If the flowery language is a bit much for our twenty-first century taste, we would do well to remember that ours is a culture that caters to the lowest common element of society. Ours is the culture that over-humanizes Christ at the expense of His Divinity. Ours is the culture that celebrates the mediocre, panders the trivial, and promotes the vulgar. Yet ours is the culture that looks back on the past with disdain, as if our ancestors lacked our "class". Truly, we don't know the meaning of the word....

God chose The Blessed Mother from all time, do not let the times diminish her in your heart.

There's Something about Mary, day 15.

Edible rosaries!

Here are two ways to honor your Catholic graduates. Invite the Blessed Mother to be present as a present! She will delight and nourish.

First, there's the The Chocolate Rosary , which can also be used as a gift for any Sacrament and as a fundraiser too.

Then, there's this idea...rosary cupcakes!

Thanks to my local gurus of crafty Catholic homeschooling, Jessica and Cecilia. They made these rosary cupcakes for our Catholic Homeschool group graduation Mass last year.
Make sure you say a Hail Mary, as these treats are meant to inspire devotion to Our Lady and The Most Holy Rosary.

Being faithful to the Magisterium

In my faith journey I had to learn alot about what the Catholic Church teaches and what it means to say that I am Catholic, to be truly Catholic. It requires my daily conversion and mortification of my will. It also requires that I research my faith, embrace it, especially considering that the ramifications are eternal!

Faith is often hard. If it were easy there wouldn't be over 30,000+ denominations that broke off from Catholicism because they decided they didn't want to follow it's teachings. Some Christians agree with Catholic teaching on not interfering with God's creative, life-giving power.

The Catholic Church is PRO LIFE. Therefore, Catholics practicing the Catholic faith are against the abortion of LIFE and the birth control of contracepting LIFE.

Today is the feast of St. Robert Bellarmine and the Church prays....

"O God, You adorned St. Robert Bellarmine, Your Bishop and Doctor, with marvelous learning and virtue, that he might overcome the deceptions of error and maintain the rights of the Apostolic See; grant, by his merits and intercession, that we may grow in the love of truth, and that the hearts of the erring may return to the unity of Your Church. Through Christ our Lord, Amen."

School of holiness ~ Fatima

On this, the 13th day of Something About Mary and with thanks again to The Mary Vitamin ...

The two great lessons of Our Lady from the apparitions at Fatima are the daily Rosary and the habit of offering of sacrifices to God by saying:

For the love of God, for the conversion of sinners and for the sins against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Today I will accept a sacrifice that comes my way with the words of Our Lady so that I may participate in her school of holiness.

Prayer before the Rosary
Queen of the Holy Rosary, you have deigned to come to Fatima to reveal to the 3 shepherd children the treasures of grace hidden in the Rosary. Inspire my heart with a sincere love of this devotion, in order that by meditating on the Mysteries of our Redemption which are recalled in it, I may be enriched with its fruits and obtain peace for the world, for the conversion of sinners and of Russia, and the favor which I ask of you in this Rosary. (Here mention a request.) I ask it for the greater glory of God, for your own honor, and for the good of souls, especially for my own. Amen.

Crowning Our Lady in a "Mary" dress

Today was a powerhouse! Besides being Mother's Day, it was also Pentecoast Sunday, the birthday of the church. What a day to crown the Blessed Virgin after Latin Mass!

A dear friend made this dress for my daughter with some rosary fabric that I found. Beside the rosary, the fabric has several different images of Marian Holy cards on it as well! I don't think I've ever loved a dress more. ;)

Here are my children lined up to bring flowers to the fairest.

The procession

My youngest son stopped with me to admire one of our stained glass windows that happens to be the image of Pentecost, with Our Lady at the center.

Surrounded by the love and flowers from her children, may Our Lady through her Son bless this little girl dressed for Mary and all the children and families who honored her today...as our Mother!

Happy Mother's Day!

What Would Mary Wear? Our Lady is always modest.

Many thanks to Jessica at Shower of Roses where I found this wonderful link to Mary Ellen's article on Modesty published in the Long Island Catholic.

At Fatima, Our Lady's promised sign was viewed, filmed and documented in newspapers. There were 70,000 present. She told the children that Our Lord was offended by new fashions.

When Our Lady appears she is always feminine, celebrating her modesty and covering what is sacred. Our God created us male and female. He designed our differences to be valued, not blurred.

For more, please visit CatholicModesty.com/ and let's take The Blessed Mother for our guide.

Let us also consider that how we dress can make it difficult for men not to sin, that we are called not to lead others into sin, that we are called to be charitable and so here is a beautiful prayer asking St. Maria Goretti, who chose death over impurity, for her intercession...
Dear Saint Maria Goretti! The world teaches that we must please others in order to be popular. Conscience demands that I please God more than one who asks an evil thing in the name of false love. Teach me by your example to instill into others a real respect for modesty and purity. Through your powerful intercession, help me to make all occasions useful for helping others to become spiritually stronger. Grant that others may see in me reason to change their ways, if that be necessary, and that I may have the courage to resist any temptation to sinful conduct. Let others be led closer to Jesus and Mary by my example.

Oh Little Saint who wanted to be popular only with your Divine Master and His Blessed Mother, help me to imitate you. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc. St. Maria Goretti, pray for us!

The Mary Vitamin

Have you heard of The Mary Vitamin? It nourishes the soul. Get your dose.

Mary Vitamin for May 7th
Topic
: Working for Our Lady with a Smile

Quote:
“Strive therefore, above all, to do your duty and to do it out of love for her: your duty, great or small, easy or painful, interesting or monotonous, glorious or obscure.”
Father Emil Neubert, SM, My Ideal, Jesus, Son of Mary, (Tan Books), 27.

Meditation:
“With a view to pleasing your Mother, be more docile toward your superiors, more amiable toward your equals, more gentle with your inferiors, more kind to all. Be more punctual in your obedience, more conscientious in your work, more patient in your trials. But accomplish all this with a maximum of love and with a pleasant smile. Look cheerfully at your painful task, your prosaic occupations, the monotonous succession of your obligations; or rather, look with a smile at your Mother who asks you to accomplish your duty in high spirits that you may prove your love for her.”
Father Emil Neubert, SM, My Ideal, Jesus, Son of Mary, (Tan Books) 27.

Resolution:
Today I will look for my Mother in monotonous or painful tasks. I will try to do my duty well and in particular, I will try to remember to smile.
“’Mother [Teresa] tell us something to make us better husband and wife.’ Mother Teresa replied with her wit, ‘Smile at each other.’ The wife thought for a moment and asked, ‘Are you married?’ Mother Teresa replied, ‘Yes, and sometimes I find it very difficult to smile at Jesus, my husband, because he can be very demanding.’”
Angelo D. Scolozzi, M.C. III. O, ed., Thirsting for God, (Servant Publications), 173.

Marian Vow:
My work is for my Mother. Those who take the Marian vow have given over everything they possess to Her. I have no work of my own. This should be reason enough to smile.
I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Thanks be to God for graces received.

Something About Mary - Day 5 Flowers for the fairest

To honor May being The Virgin Mary's month, we've brought "flowers to the fairest" in spots all over our home. We can lift a prayer to Jesus, through Mary anytime we pass by. God the son chose to come to us through Mary. Catholics realize the connection and come to Jesus the way He intended from all time, through Our Lady.
